Title: An end, a beginning, a day at a time
I had a party on Sunday afternoon. It was held at a church hall which a friend describes as being like the old village hall. Simple, a bit rustic, but a freindly space. My party was to celebrate the end of my PhD. My thesis, painfully revised over the past three years (although very little writing was done in the first dark year full of depression and illness), has been printed, handed in and sent off to the examiners. A report has accompanied it which answers each of the eleven points raised following my viva in 2007. I am no longer bitter about the whole fiasco, just sad at the three years lost when I have few enough years left of my career. The examiners could have had quiet word with my supervisors saying they either did not feel that the work was ready to be examined, or that thy did not believe that they were the right people to do the examination. Instead they chose public and very painful humiliation of a fellow midwife. However, the Bollinger has now been consumed and the past is the past. Currently I'm just taking every day as it comes with gratitude, trying to learn the lesson of the day. We had great food, kindly contributed by friends, plenty of sparkly stuff to drink (including the already mentioned Bollinger) and a fantastic saxophonist (thanks to Liz for finding a musician!). A suitable celebration of a big accomplishment.
